e-Learning Definition
The more I read about e-learning the more I realize there is not a single definition. In fact, there are dozens of definitions for e-learning! In addition, there are several that disagree on what the "e" in e-learning stands for. Most of assume it stands for "electronic". However, one website I discovered had several definitions for the "e", none of which were elctronic. In their philosophy, "e" stood for "evolving" or "enhanced" or "extended" or still yet, "everywhere". (managesforum.com) Many include in their definition the use of the internet but the internet is not necessarily a requiremment for e-learning. E-Learning is not simply about technology, it's about a new social network to support learning.(cognotive designsolutions.com) Depending on what level of education someone is talking about the defnition of e-learning appears to change. One thing appears to be pretty clear though, no one appears to be advocating the e-learning is meant to replace traditional classroom instruction.

I like the words that "e" represents. I always thought with e-learning that it stood for electronic learning, but after seeing all the other representations of what "e" stands for, I agree with all of them and they do describe what e-learning is all about.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite thought-provoking. Most people would think that "e" means electronic, or even just "online". it is eye-opening to learn the other possibilities.
ReplyDeleteI undoubtedly thought the 'e' in e-learning stood for some variation on electronic. This is quite interesting. As for the last comment you made about e-learning not replacing traditional classrooms, I understand why this is. There is a place for everything. E-learning is great for enhancing learning but should never be thought of as the "answer" to getting rid of traditional learning settings. There are certain elements to learning that just couldn't be captured if education was restricted to this setting.I don't even know if it is feasible or even possible!
ReplyDeleteWell this is news to me , Gary. Thanks for the new perspective. I always thought it was "e" as in "electronic."
ReplyDeleteit's amzing that there are so many understanging existing for elearning! different definition stands for different perspective, which makes e-learning diverse in its meaning!
